How to Prevent Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

by pregnanc on August 30, 2011

Women are most prone to yeast infections especially during pregnancy. Yeast infections are fungal disease that can cause a range of complications from minimal symptoms like itching, redness of the vagina, irritation, discomfort during sex and a burning sensation during urination. However, yeast infections can be a serious concern if left untreated which can become life threatening.

Because of the increased amount of estrogen in a pregnant woman’s body, the vagina is prone for yeast to grow and overwhelm other microorganisms which leads to the infection.  While this illness is very common to pregnant women, there are several things you can do to increase your chances of not getting a pregnancy yeast infection.

First, always remember to wear clean, dry cotton underwear. Yeast thrives in damp and moist environments so make sure that you clean your lady parts and stay dry. It’s also good to make sure that air can circulate easily. This helps keep you dry and cool so make sure you wear loose jeans or shorts. The material of your clothing is also important. Cotton is best as it will absorb the moisture away from your body, and try to avoid polyester, nylon and leather materials for your clothes.

It is also good to remember to keep the PH balance of your vagina. Chemicals from soaps or deodorants can upset and even eliminate the natural balance and protection of your vagina, leaving it prone to infection.

Lastly, maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. This ensures that your body and its immune system is in top shape to fight off any complications brought about by pregnancy yeast infection. With these simple measures, you increase your chances of fighting of any disease and at the same time, reduce any difficulties when you are giving birth to your child.
